Occasionally I’ll receive emails or messages from women who have read a Gray is Ok! entry that they have or haven’t enjoyed. But recently I received a message from a young man that has been reading this blog. I must admit, that I never think that men may be reading. So, men this one is for you!
I just don’t get it. Why is it that when your hair turns gray you are “aging gracefully”, but if we women don’t color our gray, we “look older”? It’s not your fault that you look better gray than colored or toupee’d, in fact, most women I know prefer their men gray and society certainly accepts your hair, or lack of.
For the past few years I have been following a local newspaper who gives an annual free makeover to three people. They always try and give one to a willing man. In each and every case, if the participants are “older” and their before photo exhibits gray hair, the after photos will always leave the man with his gray, but the woman has been colored! And there’s always the comment like, “With Dave’s new fashion wardrobe his gray hair gives him a more sophisticated appeal”. For the woman it’s, “Kathy looks tired and frumpy with her gray hair so making her a blonde has given her a fresh new look.” Ok, so Dave probably already felt confident with his gray and Kathy doesn’t, so let’s boost her confidence by changing the beauty that God gave her?
Men, I’d like to encourage you to let the “Kathy’s” in your life know how beautiful they are with gray hair. Let her know that God gave her the beauty that adorns her head and love her for it. That’s what builds confidence. And as for you, don’t cover that gray with color or a “rug”, be proud of what God has given you.
Does the Bible say anything about men and gray hair? Yes sir! Proverbs 20:29 says, The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head. So men don’t worry about losing the strength of your younger years and bask in the “beauty” of your age. And women, God’s Word says nothing about our beauty fading just because we have gray hair. And for all of us, remember that He points out in Proverbs 16:31, that with our gray comes wisdom, and that ain’t so bad.
The lamp of the Lord searches the spirit of a man; it searches out his inmost being. ~ Proverbs 20:27
